Research
Dr. Abdérafi CHARKI conducts his research within the "Dependability and Decision-Making" team at LARIS (Angevin Research Laboratory in Systems Engineering, University of Angers, France). His work focuses on evaluating the performance and reliability of complex systems throughout their life cycle, with an emphasis on both modeling and data-driven approaches. For more than five years, he has been advancing methods based on machine learning and deep learning to support the diagnosis and prognosis of system performance. He is currently supervising five PhD students.
Current PhD Supervision
- Data-driven methodology for renewable energy systems: supervised and unsupervised learning approaches (University of Angers).
- Operational safety of control systems using digital twins: predictive models in industrial environments (ESAIP).
- Development of a virtual multi-dimensional measurement system for complex geometric verification (CEA).
- Hybrid AI approaches based on augmented data for system performance diagnosis and prognosis (ANR DIA-SOLAIRE).
- Impact of AI-integrated maintenance practices on photovoltaic power plant performance (LEMNA, University of Nantes, ANR DIA-SOLAIRE).
Academic Background
- PhD in Engineering Sciences (2000, University of Technology of Compiègne, France): Characterization of static and dynamic behavior of bearings in mechatronic systems, in collaboration with the LNE (France's National Metrology Laboratory) and Framatome.
- Accreditation to Supervise Research – HDR (2011, University of Angers, France): Multi-scale reliability from component to system, using stochastic Petri nets for functional and dysfunctional analysis.
Doctoral Supervision (2005–2025)
Since 2005, Dr. Charki has supervised 13 PhD students: 7 as research director (including 5 ongoing) and 6 as co-supervisor. Topics cover reliability of embedded systems, mechatronics, photovoltaics, wind energy, building energy performance, and quality management. Several were conducted through international joint supervision with UCAD Dakar (Senegal), Abdelmalek Essaadi University (Morocco), and the University of Nantes (France).
Scientific Contributions
- Publications in refereed journals, conferences, book chapters, books, and software development.
- Scientific leadership: Co-chair and scientific committee member of the International Congress on Measurement, Quality and Data Sciences (MQDS 2023, Bordeaux) and its follow-up, the International Conference on Measurement, Artificial Intelligence, Quality and Sustainability (MAIQS 2025, London).
- Founder and Editor-in-Chief (2010–2023) of the International Journal of Metrology and Quality Engineering (IJQME), now indexed in Scopus, EI Compendex, DOAJ, and Crossref, covering measurement, sensors, smart manufacturing, reliability, uncertainty, quality, and data science.
